Sharing my post layoff lessons and reflections

No-holds-barred podcast conversation on episodes 22-24 on On My Own Terms Podcast

Happy Sunday!

Hi, welcome to another issue of On My Own Terms newsletter.

I have received responses from some of you for my previous issue - Job-Hunting 3 times within 12 months. I have spent last 5 months - without any full time job and income - while providing for my family of 4. I have submitted >120 job applications and had any progress with 10 of them.

Some of the things I mentioned resonated with you. I recorded a special conversation (edited into 3 smaller podcast episodes) - where I shared lessons and reflections from the past 5 months. I published these 3 episodes earlier in the week and from the download numbers, I think they resonated with a lot of other people too.

P.S. Three months left to a brand new year - let us aim to be a little more intentional on how we spend our time.

Best,

John Lim

Open and candid conversation about my nearly 1.5 years journey since getting impacted by layoff

I sat down with ex-colleague Aaron (also first guest of the podcast) to have a heartfelt no-holds-barred conversation about my journey. (Thanks Aaron!) This conversation is captured on episodes 22 - 24 of podcast.

Above: Screenshot of the 3 podcast episodes

Some topics covered in episode 22 (Part 1) include:
- John getting laid off
- What's interest rate got to do with anything
- Trend with tech companies
- Your work vs identity
- What's a good layoff exercise (if there’s ever one)

The episodes will be available on other platforms soon. For now, big shoutout to Aaron for recording the conversation with me! πŸ™

About John Lim:

John has had an unconventional career by Singapore / Asian standards - with several career switches. He started his career in banking before co-founding a laser tag events company. After building the business from ground-up, growing the team to 20+ and running Singapore's largest indoor laser tag center, he joined an early-stage tech startup to lead business development across Southeast Asia. In 2019, he took a leap of faith to join the e-commerce industry, seemingly unknown sector, until a few months later when Covid-19 pandemic brought the world to its knees.

While John finds himself lucky to have 'survived' the career switches relatively unscathed, he has never forgotten how it feels like to be at the crossroads of your career and life. Now, he has started On My Own Terms Podcast - to provide the resources and perspectives he wished he had - and to help you make the most of your career to live your best life. Join him as he speaks with unconventional career changers and risk-takers, taps into their experiences and perspectives and discusses all things career. Together, they will provide you nuggets of wisdom, inspiration and actionable insights to start living life on your own terms.
